I listen to music when I write. It’s actually one of the few times I’ll listen to music. (Weird, I know!) I don’t make playlists. Instead, I pick a soundtrack while I’m writing, rewriting and revising a book. I’ll even listen to it when I’m going through copyedits.
I chose to work to Andrea Bocelli’s Romanza while writing Her Shameful Secret. Now when I hear a certain song, it brings me right back to a particular moment of the book. I usually listen to the soundtrack without stopping, but if I’m working on an important or intense scene, I’ll pick out a song and put it on constant replay. One song I had on repeat a lot was “Con te Partiro.” According to my iTunes, I had it on repeat over 100 times!
I didn’t know what the lyrics meant during the process of writing the book. Sometimes it’s best if I don’t know or they will influence the scene. It was only later when I decided to look up the English lyrics and discovered they went well with the scenes!
Here’s a clip of the song.

Con Te Partiro is one of my favorite Bocelli songs – right up there with Viva Par Le!
I like that one, too!
I like the song.
