Monday contest

Earlier this year I had decided that I was going to read a Harlequin a week. I am far, far away from my goal. It’s the 34th week of 2012 and according to my Goodreads page, I’ve only read 21 Harlequins. I think it’s safe to say that this goal is out of my reach!

How many books have you read this year?

Hmmm . . . I haven’t kept track but if I had to guess I’d say probably around 10 or 12 this year, considerably down from last year although I don’t know why. There are so many books I want to read.

  2. Anne says:

I read an average of one book daily M-F and 5-6 between Sat. and Sun., so, about 10 a week. Really.

I don’t have children, don’t watch much tv (about an hour on an average night, 2 on a good night and I don’t have cable). I was also clocked at 600 words a minute in high school. The better the book, the faster I read. The average 300 page book takes me about 2 hours if I really like it. A Harlequin takes about 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 hours.

I read about 20-30 Harlequins in the various series a year. My sister used to get every Silhouette desires (if they’re still called that) a month, but I only get them if the blurb appeals.

Because of my “habit” I primarily use the library. Even if I bought all paperback, I could never afford that many books. I buy what the library doesn’t have that I really, really want to read, usually a book in a series.

  3. Lois M. says:

Not counting August yet, 90. And the summer has been so good for me in reading books that have been on my TBR pile for like a year or more! :)

    Lois

  4. CrystalGB says:

    I would say around 30.

  5. Shannon says:

Sadly probably only around a dozen. I find it so hard to make time now that I have a child. I need to start making the time to read and relax after he goes to bed.

  6. Susanna Carr says:

Cheryl — I’m the same way. I don’t know why I haven’t read as many books

Anne — I love that my library now offers ebooks. Now I don’t have to worry about late fees!

    Lois — That is awesome!

Crystal — I would be happy if I could reach 30 books this year. Don’t think I’ll make it.

Shannon — It can be hard finding time to read for fun when you have a child. Most of the reading time is spent on child-related topics and reading to your children!

  7. Colleen says:

Oh my goodness… I could not tell. I have not been keeping track. I read like crazy… I have read a ton of shorts and a ton of full length novels. I think for this month so far, I have read about 15 books… but I have no idea how many for the year.
Susanna, I hope your dog is doing well after his surgery!

  8. Crystal Newman says:

Well I didn’t start my goal on goodreads until about April or May. My goal was a 100 books. I had to increase it to 200 because i reached my goal about a month ago. I’m now 160 books to my goal.

  9. Michelle says:

About 12 so far. This year I’ve been lucky if I’ve read 2 books a month. Sometimes I find I’ve got so much on my mind that I can’t concentrate on a story. But my TBR list grows ever longer…

  10. Sue G. says:

    I’ve read about 40 – 50 books. It’s my downtime every night!

  11. Sue P says:

Doing the Goodreads challenge. Up to 195 so far! And some of them were yours!! CHeers.

  12. Marilyn Lopez says:

Let me see… i don’t really keep track and its kinda hard with switching between my Kindle and actual books… but i would estamite maybe 40-50 :-)

  13. Susanna Carr says:

Colleen — thank you! The recovery is tough — both for him and me!

Crystal — Wow! Reading is your superpower!

Michelle — I’m trying not to buy any more books until I’ve read more books. But it’s so hard!

Sue G. — I should try and make reading my downtime every night. Even if it’s just a few pages.

Sue P. — Glad to hear it! hope you enjoyed them.

Marilyn — Having an e-reader and a TBR pile makes it tough to keep track. The only way I can keep count is looking at my Goodreads page.

  14. Erin Thompson says:

I usually go through almost a novel a day. So I would guess I have read 200 or so books so far into 2012. I get a bunch of the freebies for my kindle, sometimes I end up abandoning them part way through.

  15. bn100 says:

    Maybe around 15

  16. Alison says:

this year has been slow but in the last 3 months i’v read at least 12 books while i was recovering from surgery… now can i keep it up

  17. Mary Preston says:

I read about one book a week. So far this year I think I have read about 25 – 30 books.

  18. Wilma Frana says:

I read a book a day on the average, so that would make about 232 books.

  19. Lori Y says:

I’vw read 10 1/2 books this year so far. The latest book I am reading has two novellas in it and I read the first but have not read the second. I will read the second the weekend. Also, so far this year I have listened to eight books on CD.

  20. Susanna Carr says:

Erin – I have abandoned quite a few books because it didn’t grab me. I usually give a book 3 chapters before I give up.

bn100 — Awesome! I once heard that the average person reads less than 5 books a year. Don’t know if that’s true or not.

Alison — I hope you’ve recovered and feeling better!

Mary — That’s great! I haven’t quite found my rhythm to read a book a week but I would love to get up to that speed.

Wilma — I don’t think I’ll ever reach that number. Ever!

Lori — I need to listening to audio books. I tried it before but found it hard to pay attention.

  21. QuenKne says:

For some reason I am well below my goal this year – I’ve only read 36. I usually try to increase the number of books I’ve read by 20% from the previous year… doesn’t look like I’m going to make it this year.

  22. Susanna Carr says:

QuenKne — I like the idea of increasing the reading goal a little every year. That sounds like something I should try next year

  23. Kimh says:

    30 whoo

  24. Jane says:

I’ve probably read a little under 50 books this year.
