I always see advertisements suggesting books as gift ideas, but when was the last time you received a book as a gift? (Not a gift card but a book.) I enjoy reading but I think that might be why people hesitate to give me a book as a gift. They’re not sure if I’ve already read it.
If memory serves me right, the last book that was given to me as a gift was Escaping into the Open: The Art of Writing True by Elizabeth Berg. It’s a non-fiction book about creativity and writing exercises. A fellow writer gave it to me a few years ago because she found it helpful. I did, too!

I just received the whole LUXE series from my daughter for Mother’s Day!
Laurie, what a great Mother’s Day gift!
Now, I can swear a number of Christmases ago (we’re probably talking the 1990s here) I got a large, more expensive coffee table type of astronomy or space related book as a gift. But basically, I do not want books as a gift, and I won’t get any for my Mom simply because we really do not know each other’s authors or what we exactly read. Sure, there are some incredible few exceptions like I know which Robert Parkers she has or doesn’t, and Mom knows if it’s Jane Austen or Albert Einstein or Stephen Hawking related, and I don’t have it, I probably will want it. But even then, she doesn’t know what I have or don’t, since I have so many books spread out in different locations! LOL
Lois
Lois, I agree that’s the problem with gift-giving. One of my relatives is a major Barbara Cartland fan and hasn’t read all of the books. But when I find a Cartland book I’m not sure if she’s read it!
Books, I received one this past Christmas. It was a romance novel, but off hand, I can not recall which one it was… In the past I have received some for birthdays and Christmas.
My family has a list of my fav authors and which books I have on hand… makes things a bit easier!
Colleen, I bet that book and author list is long!
It’s rare for someone to give me a book as a gift because my reading taste changes constantly. The last book I received as a gift was at my graduation.
Ray, books for graduations are a great gift. I once attended a graduation for a small middle school. During the ceremony a teacher would talk about a student and give a book to the student that had a meaningful reason. It might be because of the student’s interest, achievement or struggle. It was a thoughtful gesture and made the ceremony feel more intimate.
It’s been a while since I received a book as a gift, but the last time was a book about Petra from one of my best friends. She knows I want to visit Petra one day.
Jane, that sounds like a beautiful book! I can imagine the photos.
The last book I received as a gift was a cookbook.
I had to laugh. I only cook because I have to.
Hi Susanna, I received a paperback copy of Serendipity by Fern Michaels for my birthday back in January. It was chosen by my 5 year old daughter with help from my husband taking her to the romance section of the bookstore. The book had a lovely cover of floral/blossoms, but is a much tamer read than I usually go for
but I appreciated the gift very much!
Janelle dens ion book, Xmas time
I receive a book each Christmas. My mother sees books as stocking fillers to supplement the other presents, but secretly I treasure the book the most.
The last book I received was “Huck” by Janet Elder, a true story about a family who lose their dog and their search to find him.
