There were a lot of great workshops at the Emerald City Writer Conference. Here are some tips I heard today and want to share with you. I think these tidbits will benefit both aspiring and published authors.
Quick Release Trilogy workshop
Editor Junessa Viloria and author Stefanie Sloane discussed the teamwork behind the back-to-back publication.
Take away tidbit: Quick release trilogies can make a debut author’s name familiar to readers and it can revitalize a mid-list author’s career. It’s a powerful way to market and build a brand and it’s easier to get booksellers excited.
Writing the High Concept workshop
Sheila Roberts, whose bestseller On Strike for Christmas was made into a Lifetime movie, gave tips on recognizing a high concept idea.
Take away tidbit: Look at what’s going on around you to get a high concept idea. What do you see in stores and in magazines? What is going on with you and your friends? This
will spark an idea.
Building a Romance Novel from the Idea on Up
Elizabeth Boyle discussed how to take your story idea and turn it into a fully fleshed out novel.
Take away tidbit:
Think about your characters’ self-definition. It may not be correct, but it’s what they believe and it gives their world order. They will go through any length to keep that belief. And what is about their self-definition that will keep them from falling in love?
Does Size Matter? Writing Novels, Novellas and Short Stories
Susan Lyons offered guidelines for writing different lengths. She also discussed the advantages and disadvantages for writing different lengths throughout your career.
Take away tidbit: Writing other lengths will help you develop your voice.
How Branded Authors Make More Money
Andrea Heuston of Visual Quill explained how to make your brand more meaningful.
Take away tidbit: Every writer needs these tools to build a brand: website, links, blogs,
marketing collateral, book covers, newsletters, promotions, social media, book
trailers, and listening to audience

Thanks for sharing with us, Susanna. I was unable to go to Emerald City this year. Hated to miss it.
I hope you can make it next year! I’m told it will be October 26 — 28. The guest speakers will be story and script consultant Michael Hauge and bestselling author Susan Wiggs
