The Emerald City Writer Conference is over and if I had to boil down the theme of the weekend to one word, I would say it was branding. There were quite a few workshops about the topic and it crept in several speeches and workshops. Everyone recommended working on your brand before you even submit your first manuscript.
Here are some quick summaries about the workshops I attended on Sunday:
Branding Magic
Angela James, Executive editor of Carina Press, discussed author branding and why it’s important to start as early as possible.
Take away tidbit: A brand with a clear message is always better than a brand that tries to be clever.
How to Write Like a Full-Time Writer When You Can’t Quit Your Day Job
Susanna Fraser offered tips and tricks for writing fast enough (one to two books a year) and well enough to build a writing career.
Take away tidbit: Gradually increase your output until you’re working at a professional pace. Aim for 20,000 words a month.
Resurrecting the Muse
Gerri Russell gave an in-depth look at why writers sometimes suffocate their creative world when the pressures of the “real” world become too great.
Take away tidbit: Feed the muse with artist dates, timed writing, small rewards, music, writing classes and weekly check-in with a group of writers.
Building a Career with a Digital First Publisher
With the world of publishing experiencing a digital revolution, Samhain editor Tera Kleinfelter and NYT bestselling author Shelli Stevens discussed how authors could be a part of it with Samhain.
Take away tidbit: The non-erotic book sales are steadily growing.
