Favorite Literary Heroine contest

I just watched Jane Eyre starring Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender. It’s a good thing that I hadn’t read this book when I was a teenager. It would have encouraged me to imagine all kinds of misery and suffering. I was moody without the help!

As much as I appreciated the bleak world Charlotte Bronte created, I prefer the lighter mood in Jane Austen’s world. Or maybe I prefer Austen’s heroines over Jane Eyre. I didn’t read any of the Bronte sisters or Austen in my childhood. Instead, I read American authors like Laura Ingalls Wilder and Louisa May Alcott. I identified strongly with Jo March in Alcott’s Little Women, but I suspect every girl does when she reads that book!

Which literary heroine did you identify with when you were growing up?

For me, it was Nancy Drew all the way! She had my first name. She was smart, attractive, wealthy, personable – and could kick butt when necessary. She got to travel extensively, and solve interesting mysteries. What more could anyone ask for??!!??

  2. CrystalGB says:

Anne of Green Gables; I grew up in the country.

  3. Lois M. says:

For me, I can’t answer this the way you asked, because for the most part, I really didn’t read a whole lot of fiction from what I remember. It was always my astronomy books. So I could say Sally Ride. But going for now, of course, would say Elizabeth Bennet… but part of me wouldn’t mind being a little Lady Catherine. ;)

  4. Colleen says:

I was not much of a reader as a kid, but I did read and enjoy some of Nancy Drew’s cases and Anne Of Green Gables…

  5. Michelle says:

I read a lot of “The Baby-sitters Club” books when I was growing up. Kristy, Mary Anne, Claudia, Stacey… the way they started their own rather successful business as young girls, they were heroines to me.

  6. Ju Dimello says:

Ah, I always had a spot for Jo March (in Little women)!

As such, I didn’t feel much connected, but I liked her compared to others :)

  7. Leni says:

I didn’t like to read so I never identified with any heroines.

  8. Mary Preston says:

Cathy from WUTHERING HEIGHTS drew me to her. To be loved so absolutely & madly. I wanted to try to tame Heathcliff.
