In the crime drama television show Bones, Dr. Temperance Brennan and Special Agent Seeley Booth solves murders, fight the bad guys and struggle with a growing attraction that has lasted about six seasons. In the last season, Booth declared his love for Brennan, but Brennan didn’t want to start a romantic relationship with Booth. Why? She couldn’t trust him with her heart.
Brennan isn’t great with interpersonal relationships, but I thought she was made of tougher stuff. It turns out she’s a lot smarter than I gave her credit. Booth is not the hero I was led to believe, but the writers of the show act as if the character is prime hero material.
Because, and from now on this is a spoiler alert for those who haven’t seen any Season 6 episodes, Booth falls in love with beautiful journalist Hannah and starts living with her seven months after he declares his love to Brennan.
I know. What the hell?
And when Brennan admits to Booth that she made a mistake and should have started a romantic relationship with him, Booth responds with “I’m with Hannah now.”
Sure, the writers and producers brought in another woman to drag the storyline out a little longer. They think romantic triangles are juicy and thick with possibilities. I think it just makes the characters appear wishy-washy.
However, Brennan handles the situation like the strong woman that she has always been. She is hurt, struggles with regret, but she doesn’t let that get in the way of her partnership with Booth. In fact, she likes and respects Hannah and treats the other woman as a friend.
So when (and here’s another spoiler alert for those who aren’t caught up on the episodes) Booth decides to propose marriage to Hannah, I start to wonder about the depth of Booth’s emotions. Hannah hadn’t shown any interest in marriage, Booth simply wants to get married, and yet he’s devastated when Hannah turns him down and they break up.
Now Booth has been sulky for the past few episodes and says he’s not ready to start a romantic relationship with Brennan. Brennan tells Booth that’s she’ll be there when he’s ready.
Once again, what the hell?
The source of Booth’s bad mood isn’t a broken heart. It’s that no one wants to a) marry him, and b) be with him forever. Gee… I wonder why. Could it be because the women know his love is temporary?
Brennan has always been at his side and has never let him down. Even while he’s licking his wounds, or what the writers attempt to show as a “broken heart”, Brennan is there. Booth can place all of his trust in her and know that she has the strength to carry them both through any ordeal.
Yet, after the watching “The Blackout in the Blizzard” (Season 6, Episode 16) I had to question whether I wanted Booth and Brennan to get together.
After all, why would Brennan — who wouldn’t start a romantic relationship with Booth because she knows he’ll break her heart — choose to wait for him? She’s a scientific woman and his actions have proven her theory that she couldn’t trust him with her heart.
So far this season, Booth isn’t worthy of Brennan’s love. The writers of the show really have to kick it up a notch. Forget the love triangles and the external obstacles. Dig deeper, explore their fears and have Booth, who’s supposed to be a warrior, fight for the woman he loves.
The writers of Bones have already shown me why Booth may be the right guy for Brennan, and now I’ve seen why he’s the wrong guy for her. It’s time to show me why he’s the only one for her.
