The friends-to-lovers trope is very popular in romance fiction. There’s something tantalizing about the idea of two people with a shared history suddenly see each other differently and fall in love. They’ve already learned everything about each other and know their secrets and weaknesses. The surprise is the sexual attraction. There’s a solid foundation of trust and respect between the couple way before the first kiss.
Here are three songs about a couple who are friends and lovers. In two of the songs, becoming the best friend is considered more of a relationship upgrade than being the lover!
My Best Friend (1999) by Tim McGraw
This person is more than a lover. More importantly, she’s his best friend. She’s the one who he can count on and the only one who believes in him.
Can’t Fight This Feeling Anymore (1984) by REO Speedwagon
This has the angst that every romance reader expects from a friends-to-lovers trope. What started out this friendship has grown stronger / I only wish I had the strength to let it show
You’re My Best Friend (1976) by Queen
According to Wikipedia, Queen’s bass guitarist John Deacon wrote this song for his wife. How sweet is that?
